Squid,
As far as I can make out, if you wanted to set up a private limited company you would register the company with the Companies Registration Office at http://www.cro.ie
I’ve had a quick look, and what would probably suit you best is “a company limited by guarantee not having a share capital”.
From the CRO website:
“As this is a public company, there must be a minimum of seven members. The members’ liability is limited to the amount they have undertaken to contribute to the assets of the company, in the event it is wound up, not exceeding the amount specified in the memorandum. If a guarantee company does not have a share capital, the members are not required to buy any shares in the company. Many charitable and professional bodies find this form of company to be a suitable vehicle as they wish to secure the benefits of separate legal personality and of limited liability but do not require to raise funds from the members.”
Basically you would need at least 6 other people to become involved and to sign up as directors. I would then assume that you’d transfer ownership of limerickblogger.org to the company. If you found 6 other people, then you could use them as editors/ administrators and share the burden of work involved in keeping the site running.
There is a bit more involved, but if you have a look at
http://www.cro.ie/template_generic.asp?ID=514&Level1=1&Level2=1&Level3=0&Level4=0&Level5=0
you’ll have a better idea of what you need to do.
I am going to have to talk to an accountant or something. I can’t even find a company number or know how to obtain one.
How did boards.ie become a ltd company, there are only four of them running it, and I don’t even think there were four when they became a limited company.
A similar set up to theirs is what I was thinking of
Hiya, just a quick note to say I really like your website and I’m not even from Limerick! you are down to earth on your comments and its good to see what is really going on. I hope you can make it into a plc and continue the great work.
Dub.
Thanks Dub, it’s nice to hear from someone who realises that Limerick is a growing, vibrant city and that we’re not going to let a few bad seeds ruin it for the rest of us.
Thanks again for your comments.
Cheers,
Paul.
no bother, best of luck with it. I’m heading down to Limerick first weekend in August (friend won a weekend). We heading to Quality hotel. Can you recomend some hot spots for us?!
Anne.
Bar wise, you have to check out Nancy Blakes, and The Old Quarter. Club wise, there’s Trinity Rooms, and the Icon. Food wise, try Fat Zoes, The Bank, and the Jasmine. All are in the city centre and about 5 minutes walk from each other.
If you’re staying in the quality hotel, then you’ll probably need a taxi into town, but unlike Dublin there’s not usually a lack of taxi’s around town.

Seven members required for a publically traded company, two (or one under certain circumstances) required for a private company. Boards was a company before it registered boards.ie (the lads changed the company name to boards ltd for one day so they could get the domain name, the other company structure came later)
Cool, thanks, looking forward to visiting :-).
Anne.
Seamus: Cheers for that. I didn’t know that Boards had changed their name to get the domain name. The info I got was direct from the cro.ie website and basis.ie. I gave it a quick look, but it seems to be a bit of a daunting prospect to set up a limited company.
Dub: No problem. Enjoy your trip to Limerick, I’m sure you’ll find plenty to do!
