Theme Change

January 8th, 2007

For the one person out there who may occasionally stumble across this blog, I’ve changed the theme. Yet again.

As I’ve decided to actually use this site as part of my web design business, I wanted something that would look the part. voilà – new theme.

Site Change – Please Update Bookmarks

January 3rd, 2007

I’ve made a “minor” change to my site, and put up an entry page which gives the user a choice between this site (paulmc.org) and my web design site (rubicondesigns.net).

The site structure still remains the same, apart from the initial page. If you want to bookmark the main page of my personal site, then please use http://www.paulmc.org/home.php.

Should I or Shouldn’t I?

January 2nd, 2007

For the past couple of days I’ve been trying to decide on whether I should write about a subject that has been dominating the headlines. The question is: do I want to be like the rest of the world and write about something which has been covered so extensively? Having done a quick Google search for the subject, I find that there are approximately 300,000 blog articles on this subject already. A Google News search gives about 23,000 results and a Google web search gives about 26,500,000 results. That’s an awful amount of writing devoted to just one topic of conversation.

So what would my opinion count for among the 26 million or so other opinions? Would it make any difference? Would it not be just one more article lost in the dross that is the Internet, only noticed by the Googlebot as it passes it’s virtual fingers over my blog?

Tag Cloud

January 2nd, 2007

You may have noticed a new page has been added to my blog: Tag Cloud. This is a nifty little plug-in which examines each category contained within this blog, the number of posts within each category, and then displays the results in a list format. The nifty part appears in that the name of the category is scaled according to the number of posts it contains. The more posts, the larger the name appears. It’s a quick and easy method to see the relative usage of the different categories.

New Website

January 2nd, 2007

My new website is up and running: www.rubicondesigns.net. I finally decided that I would go ahead take my web design hobby to the next level. I have my business cards ordered and expect them to arrive shortly.

While it doesn’t mean the end of this website, it does mean that even without it generating any new business I’ll have to devote some time to getting it fully operational. As well as a marketing tool, I have also decided to make it into a technical support site, so I now have a forum and trouble ticket section to maintain. I have a lot of articles and FAQ’s to write, so it will take up a lot of my free time.

With any bit of luck, this will generate some income, but if not, it’s still experience to put on my CV.

Auld Lang Syne…

December 31st, 2006

It’s that time of the year again. Time to make your resolutions. Time to dust down the memories of the past year, and to look forward to the new.

WordPress Tiger Administration Plugin

December 31st, 2006

I’ve just installed the WP Tiger Admin Plugin This has got to be the coolest looking plugin for WordPress that I’ve come across yet. Unfortunately, you won’t see it unless you have your own blog. It changes the look of the WordPress Administration area. So if you do have a blog powered by WordPress, I highly recommend installing this plugin. Just so you can say “ahhh” to yourself.

Blog Spam

December 28th, 2006

Over the last few days I’ve started to get some spam comments directed towards this site.

Luckily, I had set up this site to require users to be registered to leave a comment, and for all comments to be moderated before they were posted.

I have slightly updated this to require all users to be registered and logged in before they can comment. All comments will still be moderated before I allow them on the site. For anyone that wishes to post a comment, (not that many I admit), this will slow down the process, but it will ensure that no spam is posted.

Dead Hard Drive

December 28th, 2006

A couple of months ago I bought an external hard drive: it was a Seagate 320GB 7200 rpm. Now it’s a paper-weight. I felt that with all the data I had on my PC, it would be a good idea to have some sort of backup. That was the theory anyway. But of course, the practice was quite different. I stored all my data on that drive instead of on my PC.

There was about 200GB of data on that drive. That was until yesterday, when I committed the faux pas of plugging the wrong ac adapter into drive. My laptop uses 19 volts. The hard drive expected 12 volts. No smoke, no bang, just a continuously flashing LED on the drive. And no drive detected by the operating system.

Broadband Issues – Yet Another Update

December 23rd, 2006

After another call and more troubleshooting with my provider I’m still having problems with my connection. I’ve done everything I can to eliminate any hardware or software problems on my side. So far I’ve tried with:

  • 3 different computers,
  • 2 different routers,
  • no router,
  • Windows XP (Home and MCE),
  • and Linux.

Still no joy. I know the problem is not with my equipment, but I’m having a tough time explaining that to my provider.
